Social Traders identifies the following typology in describing social enterprise.  The case study tab of this blog has used this typology in identifying social enterprise in the Nambucca Valley.

  • Hybrid: mixture of the following typographies
  • Cooperatives, Associations and Mutuals: Member benefit businesses (i.e. childcare)
  • Fair Trade Organisations: Benefit producers in developing countries by paying fair prices and onselling in developed countries
  • Charitable Business ventures: Commercial businesses established by charities to generate revenue for their charitable purpose
  • Community Enterprise: Busineses set up to provide benefit to the community in which they are located
  • Australian Disability Enterprises: People developed to employ people with a disability that are unable to work in mainstream businesses.
  • Communty Development Finance Institutions: "Financial institutions that provide products and services to individuals, organisations and communities who have difficulty accessing mainstream finance"
  • Social Firms: "Businesses that undertake commercial work in order to create employment for people with a disability."
  • Intermediate Labour Market Companies: "Businesses that undertake commercial work in order to train, support and employ disadvantaged job seekers and then transition them into mainstream jobs."
